Guidance Counselors are certified school, college, and university professionals who specialize in helping students make decisions concerning their educational and personal lives. They guide and structure educational and vocational directions as students pass from K-16. It is a most rewarding field for counselors when trust is established and guidance allows the individuals to grow emotionally, personally, and scholarly helping them make good sound decisions as they move through childhood, adolescence, and into productive well-adjusted adults in an ever-changing society.
Mentors may be students, teachers, parents, professional scientists, mathematicians, engineers, or researchers in business or industry. The mentor must believe in and have a positive attitude and influence on this person's life. All mentors encourage and help to sustain the curiosity and love of science and mathematics throughout life. The duration for mentoring may be short term for a science project or a long-term relationship guiding an individual into a new profession or research field that lasts a lifetime. Mentors are available in schools for "new teachers"; colleges and universities for students doing STEM projects for competitions; and for all students wanting to know the "whys," the what-ifs," and the "how-to" in the sciences and mathematics.
